Tiny Home Village aims to end homelessness for young people aged 18 – 24

VICTORVILLE, Calif. – Southwest Gas to sponsor four tiny homes through a donation to the Family Assistance Program. The Family Assistance Program has provided shelter services to the Victorville community for 38 years. Recently they announced plans to build transitional housing for homeless young adults aged 18-24 who are moving on from foster care, state custody or have left home due to unsafe conditions. Southwest Gas donated $30,000 from the Southwest Gas Foundation and $12,000 through their employee giving program FUEL for LIFE to support the Tiny Home Village.

"It is exciting to have Southwest Gas make a commitment to help end youth homelessness,” says Darryl Evey, executive director of the Family Assistance Program. “Young people deserve a place to live, and thanks to the generosity of employees and the Company, they are helping to ensure that housing is available for those in need."

“At Southwest Gas, we’re committed to strengthening the communities we serve while providing sustainable solutions that elevate the places where we work and live,” says Laura Nelson, Vice President, Sustainability and Public Policy, Southwest Gas. “Together, we recognize sustainability is so much more than caring for our environment and value our community partners like the Family Assistance Program, who will provide a positive and hopeful future for our young adults.”

“The hardships faced by foster and homeless youth are immense,” said Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh. “I am grateful to Southwest Gas for their generosity and important role in supporting these young people in their journey towards making a positive difference in their lives and creating a brighter future of success.”

“Southwest Gas is committed to making a positive impact and building sustainable communities,” says Sam Grandlienard, Vice President, Southern California Division, Southwest Gas. “We are supportive of Family Assistance Program and its mission to help people find hope in their lives and strive to be self-reliant. Through this partnership, they will help young adults put a roof over their heads, achieve stability, and help them know they have value, allowing them to focus their energy on being a force for positive change in our community.”

The contribution by Southwest Gas will fund the construction of four homes equipped with electricity, HVAC, a bed, desk, chair, and locker storage. The Tiny Home Village also has communal areas such as a fire pit, picnic tables, and restrooms with showers.

About Family Assistance Program
Since 1985, Family Assistance Program, formally known as High Desert Domestic Violence Program (HDDVP), has been providing shelter and advocacy services to victims of domestic violence (DV). Throughout the years, the agency has grown into so much more. We now have a much larger shelter, a transitional housing program, a separate outreach office, satellite offices in the cities of San Bernardino and Fontana, and we have embarked on several new programs: three runaway/homeless youth shelters, a homeless youth street outreach team , youth drop-in centers, Next Step re-entry program, community centers, anti-human trafficking program, and other programs and services to support the needs of our Victor Valley, San Bernardino, and Morongo Basin communities. As the community needs have been identified, the agency has grown to accommodate and assist our population.
